The Love Poems I Never Sent: “My Heart — The Lake”

In many relationships/dates I’ve been in up to now, I usually like to write some poems for my partners when I feel inspired and in love — whether or not it works out. Some of these poems make it to the intended recipient — but more often than not, it never makes it for a variety of reasons.

I’ve decided to try and post some of these up here both just to keep them for posterity and just my own body of work for people to check out.

I wrote this poem while I was watching my partner look out at Lake Tahoe on a Sunday morning — laying on the table in a meditative state. The atmosphere was quiet — no music/no noises other than the cool waves of the lake hitting the front of the AirBnB we were staying at. Our unit overlooked the Lake from the second story; the weather a bit gloomy as a snowstorm was settling into the city. Her beauty and grace stunned me as much as the vast lake before us — thus this poem started to come into fruition:

“My heart is the lake.

It grows year after year; fixed yet ever-changing and ever-moving.

My heart waves alongside the breeze.

It slowly looks out at the edges of each shore — not sure what new discoveries will be found.

My heart feels a touch.

It is moved by a new presence of an elegant hand, moving gracefully through the water.

My heart radiates with love.

It is captivated and transfixed by this figure of love gracefully splashing in the lake — slowly warming and waving for her.

My heart stays stalwart.

It stays constant and firm even against the forces of nature pushing against the water and my love.

No matter the distance.

And whatever the cost.

Ready and waiting.

You’ll find me.

My heart is the lake.”
