Random Musings of a Wandering Mind — Do You Remember How We Met?

I watched the movie Honey Boy tonight — a beautiful film by Shia LaBeouf on trauma, forgiveness and the element of such powerful chance encounters. Although within our families, we don’t necessarily choose who we get to be with for much of our lives; we somehow come across such important people in our lives through ‘chance’ or destiny or whatever you believe in. It made me reflect on my own encounters — some hazy; others not so much. Some have become some of the most important parts of my life while others have been a quick glance back. Here is just a random freestyle poem I wrote on these thoughts:

How in the world did we meet? Do you remember the first time?

How you gave me that odd glance from across the meeting room when we introduced our names?

When we were both late in the middle of the rain and asked where orientation was?

Where we were both chosen to lead a classroom for the very first time?

Perhaps it was at a dance class that one time when we shook hands and got into position?

Or during an icebreaker where we both named off the six instruments we both played?

Was it when I joined the tutoring course that you taught?

Or in P.E. when you couldn’t help but to grab the hand ball to pelt my face?

Were you there at the camp when we had to deal with the boy’s head on fire?

Were you lost on the road and looking desperately for help?

Or did you interview me in that tiny, tiny room?

Or perhaps I played you a tune on my clarinet?

Did we dance with Avicii in the pale moonlight?

Yelp away with good eats in the hot desert sun?

Did you swipe right and say sup?

Typed in Chatroulette and said something other than a/s/l?

Slid into my DM’s and asked for my sign?

Take a drink with me at the bar?

Shook my hand and locked eyes?

When we meet so many people in our lives,

why did you choose to stay?

And your memory not fade away?

Isn’t destiny such a strange beast?

Its purpose not completely unveiled until the very least beat.
